2005 Southeast Model African Union Conference

An invitation to Georgia's 9th SEMAU Conference

From the SEMAU Director --

Columbus State University, Columbus, Georgia is privileged to be the host institution for this year’s Southeast Model African Union (SEMAU) Conference. On behalf of the University System Africa Council (USAC) and the University System of Georgia, I would like to invite you to our 9th annual SEMAU Conference. The simulation this year will be held from November 3-5, 2005. This event will give students an opportunity to learn diplomacy and governmental organization through a unique simulation experience. The experience is bound to enrich and enhance their understanding of the political economic and cultural dimensions of different African countries and how they relate to each other and the rest of the world as members of the African Union. Experience has shown that this mode of learning is very empowering.  When the delegation members take on characteristics of their chosen countries and develop an understanding of African issues from an African perspective, they gain knowledge that is rewarding to them in their collegiate and community endeavors.

The Model African Union is a two-fold educational experience. As a participant, the first phase of your learning begins in your classroom or study sessions where you gather information, do research, and learn issues about a specific country. The second phase will occur in the simulated meetings of the actual commissions of the African Union, at the Cunningham Center, at Columbus State University.  Because both phases of the educational experience are important and necessary for the success of the Southeast Model African Union Conference, preparation of delegates is of utmost importance. Therefore, faculty advisors share a big responsibility of preparing their delegations both at the classroom level and at the conference.

Faculty advisors must demand that their delegates accurately develop and maintain the character of their country. Delegates must learn how to accept diverse interests among African countries. Accepting and appreciating these diverse interests enables the delegates to become more open-minded and often prevents them from accepting self-serving foreign policies. They also learn diplomatic protocols and leadership skills. By taking on these roles students simulate the African Union to reflect the various challenges and capabilities that shape intra-Africa patterns of conflict and cooperation.

The links on this website provide information about the rules, regulations, and other procedural information.  Please feel free to print and distribute copies to your delegates and faculty advisors.

The University System Africa Council (USAC) is indeed happy to have the opportunity to meet and work with you.  We look forward to your participation.  For registration and other information, please contact:
