How do I renew my visa?
Visas can only be “extended” or “renewed” outside of the United States. Since visas are only used as a pass that allows you to come to the border of the U.S. and your I-20, or DS-2019, is what allows you to actually enter and remain here legally, a valid visa is not needed to maintain your status. Renewal, when needed, is best done at the U.S. Embassy in your home country. Procedures and requirements for visas can vary slightly between countries and are often subject to change. As such, reviewing the visa requirements on the Web site for the appropriate U.S. Embassy or consulate is the best way to prepare yourself for the visa application process. Visit the Web site www.travel.state.gov to determine the procedures for applying for a visa at the U.S. Embassy or consulate in the country where you wish to renew.

Am I allowed to work while I am at CSU?
As an F-1 or J-1 student, you are allowed to work 19 hours a week on campus only during fall and spring semesters, and full time during the summer semester. If you want to work off campus, you will have to apply for permission. Students who work at CSU are only eligible to work 19 hours a week on campus during the semester and summer breaks. More information on international students and employment.

Do I need to pay taxes?
All international students must file with the IRS. Even students who do not work must file at least one form (8843) with the Internal Revenue Service. If you earned income through a campus job, (example: graduate assistantship or campus employment) you must file a tax return, (either 1040-NR EZ or 1040-NR). During the spring semester, the Center for International Education will hold tax workshops to show you how to properly file your tax returns. It is important to attend one of these sessions to make sure you are following the process correctly. The University of Texas at Austin's International Office has an excellent website that provides information, resources and examples on nonresident alien tax preparation. Please visit http://www.utexas.edu/international/taxes/ if you are interested in learning more about the tax preparation process.

Do I have to be enrolled at CSU during the summer?
As a student in F-1 status, you do not have to be enrolled during the summer, which may be considered your official vacation time from school. You may remain in the U.S. and not enroll in any classes. If you want to enroll in classes, there is no minimum or maximum enrollment requirement.

How do I apply for a Social Security Number?
The rules regarding Social Security numbers have recently changed. You must have a job offer before you are eligible to apply for a Social Security number.

F-1 visa holders need the following documentation in order to apply for a Social Security Card:

  • A letter from your employer stating that you have received an offer of employment.
  • An authorization letter from CSU’s international student coordinator.
  • Your passport.
  • I-94 (a small white card stapled in your passport).
  • I-20

J-1 student visa holders need the following documentation in order to apply for a Social Security Card:

  • Passport
  • I-94 (a small white card stapled in your passport).
  • DS-2019

The Social Security Administration office is located at:

7263 North Lake Drive
Columbus, GA 31909

You can call them at 706-494-6171 or toll free at 1-800-772-1213

Can I drive in Georgia with a license from my home country?
Nonresident drivers over the age of 16 years who have a valid driver's license issued by their home country may operate motor vehicles in Georgia when their license is in their immediate possession. Thirty days after the nonresident driver becomes a Georgia resident, he/she must apply for a Georgia driver's license and pass all of the required tests including the written exam, vision screening and road skills test.

How do I obtain a Georgia driver’s license?
Georgia's Division of Motor Vehicles will issue you a license based on the results of two tests: a computerized test on theory and then a driving test. To take the tests, you have to call and make an appointment. As an international student, you need to bring the following items with you:

Proof of residence (utility bill, bank statement, dorm contract, etc.).

  • Passport.
  • I-20.
  • I-94.
  • $15 fee for license issuance.

Important! You have to have a Social Security number to get a driver’s license. If you do not have a Social Security number, you will have to get a Form SSAL676 (this is a Social Security deny form) from a local Social Security Administration office before visiting a DMV customer service center to apply for a driver’s license.

Please Note: It is best not to take your international driver's license with you since it may be taken from you when you apply for a Georgia driver's license.
