Asian studies

Columbus has had a sister-city relationship with Kiryu, Japan, for more than three decades, during which Columbus and Kiryu exchange delegates regularly. In addition, Columbus-based Aflac is a major player in the Japanese insurance market. The 2000 census showed there are 11.9 million people in the United States who claim to be of Asian descent. This is 4.2 percent of the total population of the U.S.

Asian studies minor

his minor requires 15 semester hours. This should include three semester hours in lower division CHIN or JAPN courses, and 12 semester hours from the following courses:

  • ARTS 2105: Asian Studio Ceramics
  • BUSA 3135: International Business
  • ENGL 3113: The Modern Japanese Novel
  • MGMT 4116: International Management
  • POLS 3139: Asian Political Thought
  • POLS 3147: Comparative Asian Politics
  • POLS 4155: International Relations
  • POLS 4178: U.S. Foreign Policy in East Asia

The following selected topics courses may also be used for the minor if the topic has an Asian focus:

  • ARTH 3555: Selected Topics in Art History
  • GEOG 3556: Selected Topics in Human Geography
  • ITDS 1156: Understanding Non-Western Cultures
  • POLS 3555: Selected Topics in Political Science

At least nine semester hours must be in upper division courses and no more than nine semester hours may be in the same discipline. The director of the Center for International Education is responsible for advising and approval of topics and transfer courses.
